Yesterday, Paul Orwig posted to the Google Joomla Leadership Group that the OSM board had suggested that he extend his solicitation to the leadership seeking their opinion on whether they go forward with the proposed structural changes to the Joomla! Project. The original post was made October 30 and there had only been one reply and that was from Brad Baker who didn't necessarily see the proposed changes as a solution to the issues raised but said "Still, I am happy to support the majority". Which is, of course, one of the problems I see with the Joomla Leadership as a whole. (See Groupthink blog.)

Unfortunately, Paul Orwig is not only a member of OSM, he is also its Treasurer - one of the now four officer positions of the board. He is also a member of the Community Leadership Team (CLT). That definitely puts him up there as one of the leaders within Joomla.

But consider this. There was never a vote by OSM directing Paul Orwig to make a proposal to the community. (See Groupthink blog). So, the board has not placed itself on record as wanting to go forward. Only the one member of the CLT - Brad Baker replied in the initial leadership posting seeking feedback. And, in the J!People discussion group concerning the leadership proposal Paul Orwig dominates the discussion and frequently attempts to dissuade some individuals from expressing their opinions. As Sandra Warren expressed it in that discussion group " So I guess we get both OSM and CLT opinions thru Paul. I still don't like that." And there definitely was a strong sense that this proposed reorganization was NOT the solution to the issues described.

So now this leader of Joomla! again boldly expresses "his thoughts":

A new structure gives our project a stronger foundation that will enable contributors to be more effective in our current mission to "provide a flexible platform for digital publishing and collaboration".

Strange, not too long ago he posted an entirely different mission statement. (See Is It Just Smoke & Mirrors blog).

And then, against all the rules that a leader should assist a group to avoid Groupthink by "Require that higher ups not express an opinion or preference when assigning the group its task", Paul Orwig again expresses his preferences by saying he was summarizing the discussions that Occurred in J!People:

  1. Move forward with the proposed leadership structure changes as summarized in the blog.
  2. Move forward with the proposed leadership structure changes as summarized in the blog, but add an advisory group composed of members from the international community that will help the project be more aware of and responsive to the needs of the international community.
  3. Keep current PLT/CLT/OSM teams unchanged, but broaden CoC's oversight to cover all three current teams.
  4. After major project-wide goals have been defined, go out and recruit industry experts/visionary leaders in the fields that match our major goals, and invite them to join project leadership.
  5. Make no leadership structure changes, but instead define more specifics about roles, responsibilities, processes, and expectations for current leadership teams and working groups.

If he had placed Number 5 in the first position, it would have been more reflective of the feedback. Unfortunately, this looks like his preferences list in the order he would prefer either consciously or unconsciously..
