JoomlaLeaks

Leaks, Drips, and Spills

A posting by Robert L. Borosage in the Huffington Post accuses Republican Candidate Mitt Romney of “obfuscation, misdirection and straight-up lies.” A review of the meaning of those words should be very instructive:

  1. Obfuscation: literally, “to darken.”   It is a word that means that a person makes an intentional act to muddy the waters, to turn out the lights, to deceive by hiding the truth.  The main point of obfuscation is that it is intentional.  It is not an accidental covering of the facts; the speaker is determined to confuse the listener in order to deceive.
  2. Misdirection: to give guidance or instruction which is incorrect.  The implication of misdirection is, again, intentional for the purpose of sending someone the wrong way.  It’s like stopping at a convenience store to get directions, only to be told by the clerk, who hasn’t a clue, the wrong information just to get you off (his) back.
  3. Straight-up lies are instructions that are intentionally designed to mislead the listener in order to avoid facts that undermine or deny the speaker’s truths.

Sound familiar? Just apply the above to what you have seen or failed to see from Open Source Matters, Inc. trustees.

The Transparency Conundrum.

I just don't get it!

Board members at OSM haven't done the following in the last several years:

  • have a strong track-record of successfully collaborating with, enabling others and earning the respect of the Joomla! community.
  • have proven themselves a person of high character, with a history of acting honestly, fairly and openly when in leadership roles.

Yet, if you read the latest posting by Alice Grevet, OSM is seeking 3 new board members who include the above traits in their repertoire.

JoomlaLeaks has started its second petition concerning a key issue that I have been discussing in these blogs - the proposed leadership restructuring.

JoomlaLeaks has started its first online petition concerning a couple of the issues that I have been discussing in these blogs - transparency and timeliness in posting minutes and financial reports.

I join you in that hope!

Sometime yesterday or today, the minutes for the January 24, 2012 OSM board meeting were posted. I noted several areas of concern with these minutes. In the past, it was clearly noted who had transcribed the minutes. While not required, it is a good idea particularly if some legality issue should arise that the minutes failed to document. Authorities could seek out the minute taker for clarification. Certainly a minor issue but one the Secretary of the board should consider for the future.

The bigger area of concern is one I have mentioned before. How do the board members of OSM ensure that decisions made are decisions of the board and not decisions of individuals on the board? Well, it is really quite simple and all boards practice it. It is even embedded within OSM's bylaws (emphasis mine):

What else would you call it?

OSM has repeatedly lied to the Joomla! Community. No, those lies were not mistakes. They intended to deceive. Let's take a look.

tunnel vision n (ca. 1942) 1: constriction of the visual field resulting in loss of peripheral vision; 2: extreme narrowness of viewpoint: narrowmindness; also : single-minded concentration on one objective – tunnel visioned adj

  Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 1996

Some leaders perceive they can, by force of will, ensure the intended consequences of their actions – even in the face of mounting evidence that the outside forces (e.g. competitors, regulators, economic conditions, customers, or community) are not reacting to their expectations “correctly.” Greek tragedians referred to this failing as “hubris” – the overwhelming pride that blinds the tragic hero to the consequences of his/her actions. The audience can clearly foresee the inevitable fall from a great height, but the tragic hero is blind to all but his own intentions.

If you have not yet had the opportunity, I suggest you read Paul Orwig's latest communication in the Joomla Leadership Google Group.

New Regime - Same Old Tricks

In the March, 2012 Joomla Community Magazine interview with Paul Orwig, former Treasurer of OSM and now President of OSM, said the following:

Support leadership structure changes to improve collaboration and productivity, establish a collaborative process with all leadership teams to set major project-wide goals, and improve OSM’s openness and transparency.

  Paul Orwig

Emphasis shown is mine. Note that this is the same person who has stonewalled the Joomla! community for the last two years by failing to consistently provide "transparent" financial reports for community review as promised by the board, recommitted to on their J!People page, and required in their own bylaws.

As I discussed in this blog, OSM Don't Need No Stinkin Transparency, I had real concerns that one of the remaining two officers on the OSM board would be elected as President of OSM. Well, guess what? OSM managed to do one even better. They recently announced Paul Orwig was elected as President and Jacques Rentzke was elected as Vice-President. Apparently no Treasurer could be found among the existing board members so the COC has also announced:

The Board of OSM is pleased to report that the Community Oversight Committee (COC) has approved the extension of the board term of Ryan Ozimek to serve as interim Treasurer until one week after a new Treasurer has been elected, or April 30, 2012, whichever comes first.

Alice Grevet, Secretary, Open Source Matters, Inc.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Alice Grevet was elected as Secretary. That was a no brainer. She was doing all the work anyway.

OSM Don't Need No Stinkin Transparency.

OSM self-proclaims “transparent” communications, however investigation reveals that the claims are obvious smokescreens to deflect the actual lack of openness and honesty. Just read through the various blogs here if you haven't as of yet. The conclusion will be apparent rather quickly.

So what transparancy have I noted in the last month from OSM?

And, no, it is not the vote by OSM (and poorly worded by Jacques Rentzke the supposed "vote" by the Leadership Team and the Community Leadership Team) to be affiliates of OSI. The last two are not entitled to vote, only OSM can vote itself as seeking such affiliation. Perhaps it would have been better if he indicated that the LT and CLT were in agreement with the vote.
