If you haven't kept up with the changes that are already implemented for the new Joomla! organization, this may come as a surprise. Will it affect the project positively? Those that decided to implement this change think so obviously. However not everyone is sure about the impact. First off, you need to review the new bylaws that were quietly enacted on October 20, 2016. Second, you need to visualize the new organizational structure.

joomla leadership structure

Lastly, I will quote from the document released today and written by Ken Crowder & TJ Baker of the Joomla! Transition Team.

Joomla! is currently in the process of Transitioning to a different leadership structure. Over the last month, teams have been voting on who will lead their teams. A “team” is similar to what we used to call a “Working Group”.

The time has now come to open the floor for nominations for Joomla’s Department Coordinator Team Leaders. Each Department Coordinator Team Leader will be responsible for overseeing the teams within their department as well as sitting on the Board as a Director.

We are looking for nominations for the following 6 positions:

  • Production Department Coordinator Team Leader
  • Legal & Finance Department Coordinator Team Leader
  • Marketing & Communication Department Coordinator Team Leader
  • Events Department Coordinator Team Leader
  • Operations Department Coordinator Team Leader
  • Programs Department Coordinator Team Leader

The Department Coordinator Team Leaders sit on the Board of Directors and are represented in the image shown (click the image to view a larger version) as the top most circle in the column with the same name.

The Local Communities Department Coordinator Team Leader role will be set up at a later time.

Each department already has teams set up under them. The Team Leads of each team will cast one (1) vote for the person s/he wishes to be their Department Coordinator Team Leader.

Votes will be tallied and a winner will be chosen. In the event that the winner of this vote is already a Team Lead, their role as Team Lead will need to be backfilled as an individual may not serve as a Department Coordinator Team Leader and also be a Team Lead.

Once the Department Coordinator Team Leaders have been chosen, we will then vote for the Officer positions, which are: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. A different nomination form will go out for those roles.

February 14, 2017:

I almost missed it! Ken Crowder issued a notice about elections for OSM President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer on 03 Feb 2017  at 11:18. However he didn't put the link to the blog article until sometime on Saturday the 4th of February. As a Global Moderator his edit of his own article doesn't reflect any date or time of when he added the link So, presumably, the article had already fallen off the front page of the forum's active posts. The timeline for nomination and elections is pretty tight and nominations have been closed since yesterday.

  • Deadline for Nominations: 13th of February 2017 at 23:59 GMT.
  • Nominees informed: 14th of February by 22:00 GMT
  • Deadline for acceptance: 20th February 2017 at 23:59 GMT
(Nominees who have not responded by this time will be presumed to be not interested in the position and removed from the ballot)
  • Ballots issued:  By the 21st of February by 22:00 GMT
(Via a Google Form to Team Leads and Department Coordinator Team Leaders to cast votes for each officer position.  If all nominees accept prior to the closing date, this may be brought forward.)
  • Voting Closes: At 23:59 GMT 7 days after Ballots issued - Latest 28th February 2017 at 23:59 GMT.
    (Transition Team will tally up each Departments’ votes as outlined in Section6.02.E of the Bylaws (excerpt above).  If a Team Lead or Department Coordinator has not voted by this time, their vote will be classed as an abstention.}
  • Results Published: 2 days after voting closed - Latest 2nd March 2017 at 22:00 GMT

You will have to familiarize yourself on the new bylaws for OSM. The voting is also rather different. It will be interesting to watch how this all works out over the next few months. There have already been several resignations over this new structure and one three month ban. Read it in the December 2016 Board Minutes.

You will need to form your own opinion of whether this will be good for the Joomla! project or not.
